Join Us for An Evening of Neo Noir…
The Florida Center for the Book’s Big Read focus in March
is Dashiell Hammet’s noir classic The Maltese Falcon, which set the standard for private detective tales.
The Writers’ Network, a co-sponsor of the Big Read, will offer aspiring authors of dark mysteries an opportunity to present the opening pages of their works at our March program, be critiqued by writers and potential readers …and compete for a prize of $50.
Because of time constraints, the number of presenters will be limited to the first eight writers who call 954-476-7060 to reserve a spot. Each entrant will be limited to the first 500 words. The winning author will be determined by secret ballots submitted by members of the audience.
The program is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 16,
at the new West Regional Library,
8601 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation.
The program is free and open to the public. The first 30 persons who attend will receive a free copy of The Maltese Falcon donated by The Florida Center for the Book .
For information, call 954-476-7060.

BARBARA SILKSTONE: 527 NAKED MEN & ONE WOMAN
The Adventures of a Love Investigator
Wednesday, Feb. 13, 7 pm
Author Barbara Silkstone planned to conduct
1,000 interviews. But after six years of hearing men from coast-to-coast
pour out their hearts, she had to stop with No. 527. And one
of her ex-husbands claimed she wasn’t a good listener!
Possessed with a quirky view of human nature,
Barbara cut her teeth writing underground newsletters at Catholic
school in New Jersey. She now lives on the edge in South Florida
with her bi-polar cat, Pong. A frequent contributor to newspapers,
magazines and e.zines, Silkstone is in hot pursuit of the perfect
agent to represent her recently completed novel, ALICE IN BLUNDERLAND.

ATTORNEY
SARA GOODMAN, LEGAL RIGHTS FOR WRITERS.
Wednesday, Jan. 16, 7 p.m.
A former in-house counsel to Bantam Doubleday
Dell (now Random House) and Simon & Schuster, Sara now bases
her publishing law practice in Boca Raton, Fla. She represents
authors, publishers, artists, photographers and agents. Sara’s
background includes: contracts, intellectual proprietary rights,
and reviewing manuscripts for libel, copyright infringement
and invasion of privacy problems.
A member of the Florida and New York Bars, Sara
received her undergraduate degree with honors from Rice University
in Houston, and her law degree with honors from New York University.
In her "spare time," Sara founded Keep the Park in
Parkland. The campaign successfully defeated plans to pave over
a former Florida panther habitat to build an office complex—ironically
dubbed "Park Place."

PAST EVENTS

The Writers' Network of South Florida Holiday Party drew a relatively light crowd,
but those who did attend made certain it would be successful!
For starters, they donated more than 30 children's books for donation to Kids in Distress. The books were delivered the next morning, and, as usual, the folks at K.I.D. were delighted.
But the real action came during the Third Annual Faux Literary Artifacts Auction, which set a record by grossing $167. Among the offerings were Harry Potter's glasses, the original Scarlet Letter (with safety pin), a scale model of the Trojan Horse (recovered from a Taco Bell construction site by an archaeologist moonlighting as a backhoe operator), a Crayola and mascara artwork signed by Tru (Capote, that is) and an autographed $20 bill which sold for $27.
