The Plays
are the Thing at Broward Main Library
If you’re looking for enjoyment
in the theatre you can’t beat matrimonial problems, murder,
suicide and war. All of these subjects come up in a program of
staged readings of four local plays at Broward Main Library Auditorium
in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, November 14 at 7 p.m. A Night
at the Theatre, a collection of local short plays, is presented
by the Writers’ Network of South Florida. The plays are
short – about 10 minutes long – and admission is free.
Brian Reeves’ own legal background
can be detected in his play, Divorcing Bradley. Reeves of West
Palm Beach. Sets his play in an office where a mild-mannered counselor
tries desperately to stop a warring pair from tearing each other
up.
In Dead to Right by Jon Frangipane
of Oakland Park an aristocratic English couple celebrate their
25th anniversary grandly in their baronial home. But there’s
a bitter taste to the champagne – and the marriage!
Two soccer dads come together as
they bawl at their kids from the touchline in Our Boys by Peter
Hawkins of Deerfield Beach. As we get to know the dads we find
a tragic bond between them that goes far deeper than soccer.
In A Compatible Bridge by Todd Caster of West
Palm Beach two suicidal strangers meet on a bridge. Will they
jump or won’t they? As they discuss life and its swift alternative
they find they have more in common than they first imagined.
After the plays there will be a short
discussion with the writers and actors who are prepared to take
brickbats as well as bouquets.
